Texas barber written exam: the facts
Format
85 scored multiple-choice questions plus 8 unscored pretest items. 90 minutes for the scored questions, 10 more for the pretest items. Closed book. 70% correct to pass. Given by PSI at test centers across Texas.

Infection control (25 questions), shaving (15), licensing and Texas regulation (13), haircutting and styling (12), haircoloring (6), chemical texture services (6), hair and scalp care (4), nail and skin care (4).
Languages
English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese at no extra cost. Pick the language when you schedule.
Cost and retakes
$55 per attempt. Unlimited attempts over five years, but you wait at least 24 hours after a failed attempt, and you pay $55 each time.
Pass rate
TDLR's published figure for fiscal year 2025 is 37.25%: 3,150 passed out of 8,457 written exams. The practical exam pass rate is much higher. The written test is where people fail.
